Context: Less, the main character of the novel, is having a conversation with a lady who shares the same birthday as him. The two are commiserating about turning 50 and how they were so concerned with being skinny and in love… the lady then delivers this line. I love this quote. It is so freeing. Basically just says to fuck whatever other people think and don’t be so concerned with making yourself loveable for other people–just focus on how to love yourself.
