So the problem I had last week that I gave up on…. I was able to find a fix for it… on Reddit.
Here’s the link to the comment that saved the day: Set hardware settings as Never download from windows update.
(Turns out there was a PSA sticked in /r/NVIDIA that included the same instructions noted above for upgrading to Windows 10…)

Sure, I don’t play enough games for this to have really affect daily use of my laptop… but not having the Geforce icon in my notification area (bottom right on task bar) was really bothering me. Also not being able to change the default graphics for individual games really bothered me.
I’m glad I got this to work.
